It is interesting to read about the experience the team over at Big Bite had while redeveloping their website using the WordPress 5.9 platform. This new platform introduces Full Site Editing (FSE), which aspires to provide technical and non-technical users with the ability to build entire websites without the need to understand the code behind the scenes.
A particular interest was the technical challenges faced while adapting their development approach, from building the specific functionality the client may request to providing re-usable blocks of functionality that empower the administrator to work creatively to build the website they need.
At Excelpoint Limited, we can relate to this challenge. As a no-code platform, we constantly face challenges when thinking outside the box to provide innovative features to the product that give our citizen developers the flexibility to provide software that adds real value to their business.
In my experience, developing a “no-code” platform for websites or business systems is significantly more challenging than developing a traditional software product. However, the payoff in the ability to rapidly configure and deploy systems (or websites) to meet clients’ needs and the ability to pivot and change as clients do, is enormous.
It’s great to see other parts of the development world recognising the advantages to end-users of moving to a low-code or even no-code product offering. However, the advantages aren’t constrained just to end-users.
This transition will begin to open an entirely new level of opportunity for the software developers working in those areas, allowing them the chance to build exciting and innovative features for platforms that are designed to be powerful, while remaining simple and intuitive in the hands of non-technical administrators.
